Redskins QB Kirk Cousins honors marriage with sports-minded wedding band

August 2024 · 2 minute read

When Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins entered last Sunday’s game against Jacksonville the moment Robert Griffin III dislocated his left ankle after landing awkwardly on a passing play, it appeared that the backup quarterback had forgotten to take off his wedding band in his haste.

Cousins will sport the ring again Sunday in Philadelphia, as he has during every practice, because it’s actually a black silicone band especially manufactured as a wedding-ring substitute for athletes and active people.

“I have a different ring I wear when I’m not working out,” Cousins, 26, explained, asked about the silicone band. “Anything I do that’s active, I get in the habit of wearing it.”

The silicone rings, which retail for $19.99, are made by a California based company called QALO (an acronym for Quality Athletics Love Outdoors and pronounced “Kay-lo), and available in standard ring sizes for men and women.

Cousins got the idea from fellow NFL quarterback Andy Dalton, who took some well-documented grief for wearing it from a few teammates during last summer’s NFL “Hard Knocks” series on life in Cincinnati Bengals’ training camp.

Cousins said that Dalton sent him a few rings to try, and he has worn one since as a testament to his marriage.

As the company’s website states: “Because Commitment is Contagious. So Much More Than A Rubber Ring.”
