Opinion | No matter where they call home, Chesapeake bay crabs affect us all

August 2024 · 1 minute read

Marylanders know that their state’s blue crabs have plenty to struggle with just to survive in the Chesapeake Bay.

Then, when I read the July 30 Metro article "McAuliffe's claim to blue crabs has Maryland seeing red," I learned that the poor crustaceans also have to be concerned about which state to claim as their proper residency!

I was born in Pennsylvania. As an infant, I traveled across the state line to live in Maryland, and I’m still an inhabitant of Maryland. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) asserted that the crabs are Virginians , but given my experience I believe the location of blue crabs when hatched as larvae isn’t relevant, but the crabs’ “place of residence” when they are harvested and designated Maryland blue crabs is.
