The International Spy Museum moved into a larger, sleeker building near L’Enfant Plaza less than a year before the coronavirus pandemic upended Washington. Since then, the focus has been on the permanent collection, which teaches visitors about the history and ethics of spycraft by leading them through a high-tech interactive “mission” and displays of historical artifacts. But as anyone who’s taken out-of-towners knows, the experience has remained relatively static, and doesn’t give locals much reason for repeat visits.
That changes in March, with the debut of a space dedicated to rotating exhibitions. The first occupant might be one of the only things that can outshine the museum’s lipstick-shaped pistol and other tools of spycraft: a show honoring the world’s most famous fictional spy, James Bond.
“Bond in Motion” includes 17 full-sized vehicles used in 13 Bond films, from “Thunderball” through “Skyfall,” providing up-close looks at the Neptune submarine used in “For Your Eyes Only,” a Jaguar convertible with a mounted gun from “Die Another Day” and a heavily damaged Aston Martin DBS from “Quantum of Solace.” One of the more popular displays will probably be a snowmobile that appeared in the chase scenes in “Die Another Day,” which visitors will be able to sit on for photo ops. To put the various cars and boats in context, expect interactive stations and screens showing clips from 007 movies. (The exhibition is arranged with Eon Productions, which produces the Bond franchise, and the Ian Fleming Foundation.)
Of course, James Bond already has a presence in the Spy Museum: One of the first things visitors see in the lobby is a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, as driven in “Goldfinger.” This exhibition just brings the allure of the cinematic secret agent full circle.
Tickets for “Bond in Motion” are $12, and can also be bundled with tickets for admission to the permanent collection. The exhibit opens March 1 and is expected to run for at least a year.
