On January 26, five former Memphis police officers were charged with second-degree murder in the death of Tyre Nichols, 29.

Nichols was arrested in Memphis on January 7 on suspicion of “reckless driving,” according to a previous police statement.

According to authorities, after being stopped, a confrontation occurred, and Nichols eventually fled on foot. The subsequent capture of him by five police officers resulted in a second altercation. Nichols was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, according to police, and complained of “shortness of breath.” On January 10, he died as a result of his injuries.

Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis recently questioned the justification for the stop due to a lack of supporting evidence. Davis told CNN’s Don Lemon on Friday morning, “We have not been able to substantiate reckless driving.”

Davis did add that the absence of evidence does not necessarily imply that the claim about reckless driving is false.
